I just saw a complete set sold for a bit over $9,000 (w/bp): https://coins.ha.com/itm/modern-bul...ge-lotlinks-12202013&tab=MyTrackedLots-101116 With 1.85 ounces of gold (and gold @ $4,350/oz.).....I figure the 1995-W ASE was sold for around $1,300 tops. I thought the price for a PF-69 was closer to $3,000. If the price has fallen, has supply increased and what about the price for the ultimate, the PF-70 ASE ?
I remember I once had a chance to purchase one of those at a show for $3,100 and I thought it was a bit too much.
The price of just the proof silver eagle has changed a lot over the past 30 years. At one point they were bringing 8 to 9K. Over the years the price keeps going down. Anyone buying the 5 piece set need to be careful. Way back there were reports that folks were taking the W proof silver eagle out of the set and replacing it with the normal P proof. I was upset with the mint for only offering the W proof with the gold set. Those that had been collecting silver eagles were faced with paying $999 to keep their set complete. I bought the set from the mint with plans to just sell off the gold but never got around to it. With the current price of gold, I'm glad I didn't. I have thought about just sending the silver eagle in for grading. It would be really cool if it came back graded as a 70. If it came back at a lower grade I could always crack it out and put it back in the set.
You mean for a 69 grade, right ? The 70 DCAMs are still low-5 figures. Good point...but I thought in 1995 only a "W" West Point mintmark was on the ASEs ? There would be no ASE without a mark (indicating Philadelphia). Nice bit of luck hit your way, congrats !!
I could had two of these sets for $1,200 apiece when I was a dealer in the 1990s. I was slightly attracted because it was a complete bullion coin collection in a U.S. Mint package. I have had a thing for coins in the mint package. I find that far more interesting than the same thing in a slab. Of course the current mint packages are so sleazy that they are not worth my time. This is an example of where the mint screwed the small collector unintentionally. The Silver Eagle was thrown in as a bonus to the set. It turned out to be an expensive key date which the little guy only could have gotten by buying an expensive gold Proof set. I view the 1995-W Proof ASE as ridiculously overpriced. With a mintage of 30,125 and a virtual 100% survival rate, $3,300 and up in the current Red Book seems high. It’s no wonder that prices have fallen for the thing through the years.
Like the MCMVII HR Double Eagle...it's the demand side that drives the price. You have TONS of ASE collectors who collect simply because it's affordable. There is 1 key date which costs several hundred dollars (if you get an AU or mid-60's coin) or $3,000 (PF-69 DCAM) or $12,000 (PF-70 DCAM). I believe the high for a PF-70 was $86,000 but that was about 12-14 years ago. I'm not sure why the price wasn't higher EARLIER, maybe the TPGs weren't grading (modern) ASEs before 2010 ? Whatever....as the prices for PF-70's and PF-69's caught attention and got noticed in the coin magazines...more and more people started having their coins graded and of course...as supply increased, the price dropped. There was a pretty rapid decline from the bubble-peak of $50,000 - $85,000....we stayed at about $20,000 for a PF-70 for a few months or a year or so.....then slid towards $15,000 for a few years....and now at about $12,000 depending on the venue for sale, the holder, etc. Does CAC sticker ASEs ? If they did, I guess that could be another variable.
