@russell1256, you must have missed the “X” for the “Draped Bust half dime, small eagle.” That type is harder to find than the other two.

Lord M, Mark, and John - you all have very nice type set collections. So much dedication, congratulations!

I have never looked at my U.S collection that way - don't know why, guess it's because I am a foreigner.

I collect by types - ie, colonials and early copper, bust and seated dimes, and some selected dates for quarters, halves, and dollars. 95 % is non-encapsulated (as I find them in Europe). Just a few in gold.

Have you guys ever considered doing Year Sets? i.e - as many coin types for a given year as you can put together?

Me either, but I looked through the 7070 list a while back and was amazed at how many holes I could fill. It's never going to be something I focus on, but I'm sure it's fun to put one together.

I have for 1892 - but mainly the dimes, quarters and halves. I am trying my best to ignore that for now and just work on what I am missing in that type set. Of course as I type this I know I am going to look at an 1892 Barber Half tomorrow at the local shop for the 20 and 21 century album.

It’s a purely secondary focus for me- which is why I chose only the most basic of type set lineups to follow. I will continue to be an eclectic, freestyle, mostly unstructured collector. (I’m mostly World & Ancients, after all.)

Just browsed Draped Bust half dimes. Found a mid-grade CircCam I loved. $5,500. Ouch. I’ve never spent that much on a coin and likely never will. Makes me rethink the inclusion of the small Draped Bust silver.

I also rethought the inclusion of the 21st century small dollars (Presidential and Innovation). They’re in. Why not, it’s just two types.

Just agreed to buy a nice CAM SMS Kennedy half. That’s a type I haven’t had since the last time I did a type set, because to be honest, Kennedy halves bore me to tears. This one’s a sweetie, though, and it’s from my birthyear.

I have a 1913 Proof set from the cent to half dollar.

I put together a 1795 year set from the half cent to the $10 gold piece. The grades range from AU-55 to MS-62. I have exhibited the set twice, but it has come in second in the U.S. category for reasons I don’t understand.

I thought doing a 1796 set, but the half cent, $5 and $10 are stoppers. For mega rich are enough bright and shiny and specimen 1796 coins to try for a “Proof set.”

Other dates go through my mind, but gold coins are often the stoppers.

I am missing just five coins to complete my NGC set of copper and silver type coins. The 1793 half cent, the chain cent, the 1796 quarter and half and a Gobrecht dollar which I understand is really a pattern but who wants argue with NGC.

The 1836 Gobrecht Dollar with “coin turn” and eagle flying “onward and upward” is generally considered to be a regular issue. The mintage was 1,000 which was too high to be pattern. Other Gobrecht Dollars are patterns.
