Hi , I would like to ask if anyone knows what varietie /Overton number this would fall under or if I have made a new discovery here ? It is an 1827 bust half dollar which appears to have the 21 obverse but the reverse is puzzling as it doesn't appear to be the dotted beak O-148 varietie I have no clue as I cannot find any pictures or other coins with these distinctive die marks above the shield I have every book on these coins and cannot find anything about this . Thanks much !
Very interesting. Have you tried looking at this website? http://bustieguide.com/overton.php?d=1827 Also if I recall correctly @okbustchaser is quite knowledgeable about the 1827's.
You might check out Dave's site also. I did not know 1827 had so many "O" numbers http://maibockaddict.com/1827-capped-bust-half-dollars.shtml
SuperDave has this one. It is O-131. The same obverse die as the OP thought, but a second marriage this time with the X reverse rather than the "dotted beak" AG reverse die. Even later in its life the 21 obverse die was paired with reverse Z to form the 133 die pair. And yes, McBlzr, 1827 has 49 different die marriages--the most of any year.
Hi okbustchaser , Yes I see it thank you for putting this to bed. Also can I ask what do you think in way of value for it ? It is much nicer in hand has lots of luster but that scratch has me worried though.
That scratch will lower the value by about 30-40%. If it has been cleaned (and the pictures suggest that it might be, though I am not certain), then expect about a 50-70% reduction in value. Also, it is spelled "variety".
It might have an old cleaning and yes you are correct "variety" sorry bout that my mind is not functioning today too much partying
While I'm at it does anyone want to take a shot at this 1857 Flying eagle which I believe is a Judd 187a but not sure if it even is. Appears to have all of the characteristics I think ? but just not sure if it is. Maybe one of you guys know better ?
This would not be the first Business Strike I've seen with this gouge. For example: https://coins.ha.com/itm/flying-eag...38-184.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515
Ahhhh yes I see, thank you for finding that, I figured it was too good to be true ! Well I just want to say thank you to everyone for putting the effort in helping me out it's been a real pleasure ! Hope I find more interesting coins in the near future. Nite for now.
