Many years ago when I was first starting to buy and sell coins, I remember selling a coin like this. I later discovered it was a mint error called a retained cud, and I have been trying to find another ever since. I finally found one being sold by great southern, and just got it today. It was not listed as such, which is why I call it a cherry pick, but I did pay more than I normally would, so probably others saw it as well. Do you think it has a shot at grading? There is a very light rim ding on the obverse, and a few very light scratches on the reverse. I have seen worse get graded, but you never know what mood the graders will be in it seems. And here is an example of one already graded. I like the way they have the reverse shown facing forwards.. I might go for that too!
The rim ding you're talking about, is it above the B in LIBERTY? If so, I think it's fine. It isn't very visible in the photo, and this is a fairly small coin. The reverse scratches seem like a bigger problem to me. Is it UNC? I'm pretty bad with these, but if it's circulated, I think it will be fine. If not, then I would guess probably not, due to the scratches.
Ya, I would say the scratches would be a better chance of keeping it graded than the rim ding. I have MS graded Indians with a lot worse scratches, but have also seen some bagged for similar.
No way of knowing until you see the coin in hand. Remember Great Southern is an expert at photographing his coins so that problems don't show and the coins look better than they actually are.
Any guesses? I can't see it going above 61-62 with the light scratches on the reverse. But the luster is still pretty nice.
I laughed right out loud. Stuff like a retained cud is all but impossible to find on later gold, is it not?
Speaking of which, will there be a meeting of the Matte Proof Lincoln Cartel at the ANA Orlando next week? Or is that an ongoing thing all three days at Angel Dee's?
Nice glamour shots, but do you have any real images of the coins? All GSC photos look good; that and a liberal return policy is how they get away with what they do.
As do I. I frankly don't know what GSC haters have their monitors set like. Mine is calibrated and my GSC coins look just like their GSC photos. They grade way high too, and I only buy raw from GSC. My computer IS a nice Mac and not some cheap Windows PC.
Both look like proofs. The 1915 has the same scratch on the rim as my former 1915 proof, except your photos show it much clearer.
