Anyone out there that remembers the nickel shortage of 1964-65? The First National Bank of Monroe, Wisconsin, to help their small business customers, made several thousand wooden nickels that could be exchanged for cash at the business' and the bank. The Federal Reserve found out and sent agents to the Monroe bank and confiscated the remaining wooden nickels and charged them with violating "franking laws". Does anyone own any of those wooden nickels?

I remember a silver coin shortage in the mid 1960s but not a nickel shortage. This story is new to me, and I don’t remember reading about it in the coin publications at the time. Still I guess it’s possible.
