A small Triskeles victory

I went into the Triskels auction looking to score a lion and a wolf. Plus a couple of other cool coins.
While on break at work I saw a list of emails. The cool lion Cherronesos I was was after had closed and someone out bid me. Meh.
But when I saw the cool wolf had ended and I had absolutely no oppostion.
    I imagine I felt a little like @stevex6
    Hammer at opening bid ca-#$*ching :D :D

Ya thats right, a cool "LITTLE" wolfie coin for $60
    Lykaonia, Laranda AR obol
    10mm, .69g, 12h, 324/3 BC
Head of Harackles facing slightly right. Wearing lionskin head dress club over shoulder
Forepart of wolf right, star above.
    SNG BN-;cf - rare
    Lighly toned extremely fine

Nice!! Those seem hard to come by in good condition. Yours has a much better strike and centering than the ones I recall seeing :)

    Okay :D

I picked up my first scarab in the recent CNG auction. I've wanted one for some time but really don't know much about them-- including how to distinguish authentic from fake. CNG has scarabs once a year or so and I figured the likelihood of a fake is less with them, plus this one has more of a pedigree than some.

I've unsuccessfully tried to win scarabs in past CNG auctions but this time stuck. It was the only one I bid on and I was very happy to win it and for less than estimate and with only one incremental bid. I like the unmistakable depiction of Isis and the sentiment expressed by the cartouche.

    Seller's images.

Blue glazed steatite scarab. Egypt, Late Period, 664-332 BC. Face engraved with winged Isis standing right before a solar disk and a cartouche containing r’nfr, or “may beauty exist”; below, the hieroglyph n’b or “lord” (14x10mm). Crack down center with some very minor loss of material on back.
Ex Christie’s London ‘Fine Antiquities,’ 10 July 1991, lot 85 (part of).

I looked at several scarabs at CNG as well. I don't have any but I want some.
    Yours is really nice @TIF.
I know I've seen Erin @Johndakerftw post some in the past.

Wow, Smojo => congrats on bagging that cool wolf!! (it is a very sharp example)

    Lycaonia, Laranda, AR Obol
    Date: 4th cent. BC
    Diameter: 10.6 mm
    Weight: 0.4 grams
Obverse: Baal seated, holding grain ear, grape bunch, and scepter
Reverse: Forepart of wolf, crescent above

    Lycaonia Laranda AR Obol.JPG

My example has a different obverse subject (I find it a bit difficult to make-out Baal seated, etc, etc) ... but I still love the wolf!! ($90, delivered)

@Smojo: Outstanding little coin that, somehow, missed when I browsed through the catalog! Didn't even know that there were front facing Heracles coins, especially this small. I grab a few coins in that auction, like this one:

Macedonian Kingdom: Alexander III 'the Great' (336-323 BCE) AR Drachm, Magnesia on the Maeander (Price 2009)

Obv: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin headdress
Rev: ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ; Zeus seated left, holding eagle and scepter; in left field, monogram; in exergue, maeander pattern

@TIF: Congrats on that scarab. I was one of the early bidders on that one, but the dreaded work kept me from bidding on the scarabs, again. So, I lost all of them :(

I did, however, manage to snag this:

Qebehsenuef: Late Period (ca. 664-332 BCE) Blue-Green Faience Amulet (Petrie, Amulets pl. XXXII, 182e)

Oh, and fantastic Scarab score, TIF ... I love the Isis with wings (super cool)

As you probably know, I only have these two scarab examples ... just in case you were wanting coin-thread additions (here they are)

Thanks stevex6! Funny your profile pic was one of the other coins I bid on, but got called away at around that time . Was extremely busy that day, but did manage to sneak a bid or two...

BTW, all those scarabs are making me jealous, definitely need to get one...

I feel your pain. Wednesday is the busiest workday for me and it has become difficult or sometimes impossible to babysit the CNG auctions. I dropped the one-increment bid on this scarab at ~5 a.m. and was too busy to see if I won until hours after the auction ended. I hate having to bid that far ahead of closing! I was happily shocked to have won, so I'm glad you didn't rebid :)

    Cool amulet!

KILLER SCARAB, ESPECIALLY your first! Congrats!

Like you, be careful. Stay with reputable dealers or auctions. I have been reading several books on these, and you still have to be careful...

You know I chase these, and I was frustrated that the ones I was going after went far above even my estimates... It got stooopid, so I fell out, licked my wounds, and was satisfied with the bigger money that I have been recently spending. :D

    But here are a couple:

    Super 'Triskeles'/CNG wins guys!!

I threw a late bid on a RR denarius that was in rough condition but a bidder went a bid higher. Now, I'm both relieved and disappointed LOL

    ME too!!!:hungry:

    :woot:

... is your bidding handle Quant.Geek? (I would never bid against one of you CoinTalk dudes) ... I often have PM-conversations with members and we decide who wants the example more than the other (etc)

=> sorry if I wrecked your Wednesday

Congrats, Smojo! That is a very attractive little wolf. I got lucky and won something at Triskeles too, and I really thought I was going to get lucky and be able to get it near the opening bid until I woke up Friday morning and saw that another well-known RR bronze collector I know was bidding on it. I ended up winning it, but at a few increments over estimate. I'll be sure to share it when it finally shows up.
