You're gonna have to take my word for it - I have a small bag of ancients I have to attribute and scan in before any other images are taken. If it sounds unbelievable - they do look like they were lightly cleaned a LONG time ago. Some of the pieces retoned so well that I didnt even notice until I got home.

I do believe you, I just WANNA SEE THEM!!! LOL

And congrats. I'll be looking for some NL pieces in a few months. I do keep my eyes out, just in case a bargain comes up. I just picked up a lot of three 1944 half dollars for $3 plus $3.50 shipping. Works out less than melt even after shipping. Now, if only they were three different dates.....

Oh alright, a quick scan. Surely you don't mean 1944 Newfoundland half dollars? They were last made in 1919.

Nice coins! The Victorian halfs are tough coins to get in decent shape. Have fun!

No, I only got Canadian halves. I haven't even begun to start on the Newfie coins yet.

I got my coins for about 2/3 of melt, AFTER shipping, so I think I did well. :D

Thread resurrection! More Newfoundland halves (Part 1)

This has been a fun set to collect off of eBay because of their very low mintages, the challenge of finding nice examples on eBay, and the tendency of PCGS to overgrade these coins by one to two grading steps compared with other TP grading services. Almost all of my set consists of raw coins found on eBay.

    PCGS XF40 (my grade - VF30)

    Raw VF25 (my grade)

    PCGS XF40 (VF30)
    1872-H Newfy PCGS XF40 TV.jpg

    PCGS XF45 (XF40)

    PCGS F15 (VG10) 1873 Newfy 50C PCGS F15.jpg .

I know, right? That's what I said. Blast from the past! :p

That being said, the new @Barberian additions are great. I especially like the 1874 and the 1876 Type 2. They have the perfect look for old circ silver.

I don't have any Newfie halves, but I definitely like 'em- I likes me some Vickies.

I do have this, however. I suppose it counts as four of 'em? ;)

Why start another thread? It did take a shop vac to suck up all the dust that had accumulated on this thread, though.

    Newfoundland halves Part 3

    PCGS VF35 (same), Mintage - 50,000
    1881 PCGS VF35 Newfoundland 50C Truview.jpg

    PCGS VF30 (Me - VF25) 1881 PCGS VF30 .jpg
    PCGS VF35 (Me - VF30), Mintage - 100,000
    1882-H VF35 Newfoundland half .jpg
PCGS XF40 (XF45 wear, but it has some dings)
    1882-H Newfy 50C.jpg

19 years between posts shows how rare they are and how so few people collect them. Imagine if these were US coins with those mintages. I should add the mintages for folks who are unfamiliar with these coins.

    Date - Mintage
    1870 - 50,000
    1872-H - 48,000
    1873 - 37,675
    1874 - 80,000
    1876 - 28,000
    1880 8/7 - 24,000
