Ever have one of those coins that haunts your dreams? Well this was the one... Me and @lordmarcovan were at FUN last year when this lusterbomb was throwing light beams across the hall at us. We haggled a bit as there was no doubt it was going home with one or the other of us. The Mighty Lord won and carried her home. It took me a year of finagling, but now she resides with me. Ain't she purdy?
Truly a lovely Peace Dollar! Congratulations to @lordmarcovan for taking that coin home and Congratulations to you @Randy Abercrombie for somehow getting it away from him.
Here are the @messydesk photos. The last pic is one I shot at the FUN show. Lusterbomb, indeed. 20th century US coins typically excite me less than the pre-1900 stuff, but this one was an exception.
Haha, you've been talking about that darn coin for a year and a half now. That's a sign that you need to pay up for it! I'm glad you finally got it - the luster is truly great.
Nice one. I like the strike on this one - but the second set of pictures are nicer. Same thing I struggle with while working my type set. Some early 1900 to 1920 can excite me. Now this coin I could pair with my 22S. PS - you can always donate it to my set. Of course my coin is only a 64+ and it could use a big sister.
So the story of this coin in the OP goes like this, at least as I remember it: @Randy Abercrombie and I were walking along on the bourse floor at the FUN show. I was the first to spot this coin- it shone like a beacon from one of the nearby cases. We mutually agreed that it had to go home with one or the other of us. Randy was actually the first to whip out his wallet and buy the thing, but we agreed that I had the option to buy it from him after the show if I wanted to. Later, in the hotel room, I decided to exercise that option while we were still in Florida, and I paid him for the coin. With it now mine, I took it over to @messydesk on the show floor the next day, to have him perform his photo magic. So the coin became part of my collection. But Randy always talked about it. Later, in his quest for another lusterbomb replacement, he bought what I think is an equally nice 1922 Peace dollar. Blast white, and every bit as lustrous as this coin. He submitted that coin to ICG and they gave it an MS64 grade. So anyway, I felt I owed Randy a favor recently, in an unrelated matter, and told him as much, wondering how to balance the scales. So he broached the subject of the FUN show Peace dollar in the original post of this thread. The lusterbomb he’d never forgotten about. We ended up swapping: his ICG MS64 for my (“our”) PCGS MS65 OGH from the FUN show. But though I was supposed to be doing him a favor by accepting the down-trade, Randy also sent me way too much additional cash when he sent me the ICG 64. So once again he’s been too generous. I held both coins side by side before shipping the PCGS coin to Randy. They seemed nearly identical. Both flashy lusterbombs. I think ICG undergraded the replacement coin.
