How on earth could this have happened?

Back in the early 1970s, there was a rash of “errors” from San Francisco Mint. They included Eisenhower Dollars struck on cent planchets and the like. I went a club meeting where a guy gave a presentation on these things. A few months later, I read in Coin World that some of them had been confiscated as stolen property.

Perhaps you had to be at a certain level not be bothered by the government. All I know is that this thing is no error. A $5 gold piece was not stuck in the bin from previous year like a 1943 copper cent.

Firm pass on this one. I don’t care for manufactured rarities.

Agreed, I do not think it is an error, rather a manufactured PR anomaly.

I enjoy Gold, and would not mind having this anomaly. Not sure if the gov’t would chase anyone down over this blatant oddity, as it would further show how stupid this manufacturing event was.
