DR, are you collecting this Vespasian because of the Jewish war connections, or do you just have an interest in Vespasian for other reasons?
Thanks for asking, Gavin! I definitely have a Vespasian fascination. It stems from his appearance on so many of the Judaea Capta coins which I am actively collecting. And yes as you said, because of his role in the Jewish Revolt suppression. Also—because most of his coins are fairly reasonably priced compared to the other Biblical era Roman emperors.
Hi everybody..I have only just joined today and really enjoying seeing your vespasians. I am a detectorist and was l ucky enough to find mine a few months ago.It has been recorded and is a contempory copy of the time .Just love the history attatched to these coins and the thrill when they pop out of the ground !! so much better than a cartridge !!
Man I wish I lived somewhere where I could find ancient coins in the ground. I don't think I'd leave the fields. Nice coin.
Thanks Ajax Its a very addictive hobby and i have found many coins over the years ..quite a few roman also medieval hammered..two saxon..iron age up to modern.Sometimes I struggle with identification so really happy to have found this site as plenty of experts at hand..Sadly often the coins are a bit worse for wear but every now and again a real cracker pops up...just love coins so very interesting.
Welcome @Solidus My favorite Vespasian mainly because of the provenance VESPASIAN Æ Dupondius OBVERSE: IMP CAES VESP AVG P M T P COS V CENS, radiate head left REVERSE: FELICITAS PVBLICA S-C, Felicitas standing facing, head left, holding caduceus & cornucopiae Struck at Rome, 74AD 10.2g, 28mm RIC 716, (RIC [1962] 555), Cohen 152, BMC 698 Ex: J.Q. I was just about to post my AE Dupondius, but it is virtually the same as yours @Bing! Condition, and issue! (Felicitas) So, I will drop a QUINARIUS of Emperor Nose-Guard (sorry, American or Canadian Football): (Pardon my poor photography - top one) RI Vespasian 69-79 CE AR Quinarius Victory seated wreath palm RIC 802 Rare
Welcome Solidus! Collecting ancients does have some similarities with addiction but while most addictions will destroy you and leave you penniless—this one will make you wiser and leave you and future generations an awesome coin collection. Big difference!
Interesting that a fourrée of a Judaea Capta type struck in Lugdunum would appear in the UK! Strangely, most of these Lugdunum types are fourrées. It's hard to find an official, solid specimen of the type. Luckily I did. Vespasian AR Denarius, 3.10g Lyon mint, 71 AD RIC 1120 (C), BMC 388, RSC 243 Obv: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG TR P; Head of Vespasian, laureate, r. Rev: IVDAEA DEVICTA; Palm tree; to l., Judaea stg. l., hands bound in front
I can't find it, Doug (the book I mean. I've got a copy of it in my garage somewhere). I'll keep looking! That's a good question. I'm going to see if I can find mention of J.Q. Adam's ancient coin collection in other pubs.
