Could this be a possible counterfeit Buffalo nickel ?

That was a quick response !! The seller was unaware and awarded a full refund but does want the counterfeit mailed back . In the end it will have only cost a little of my time but at the least I've added to my knowledge with the help from everyone on this thread .

Definitely a fake.

For reference, this is what the date on a 1914-S should look like. Relatively narrow, compared to later dates, as is all the teen nickels.

This counterfeit really blows my mind. 1914-S is a semi-key date, but not exactly one rare enough for most counterfeiters to prioritize unless in high grades. However, a genuine 1914-S in Mint State is a $250+ coin.

If you own it, my advice is to expose the person who sold it to you if you determinine they had deceptive intent.

 

I have been surprised at the types of coins I am seeing counterfeited. I have seen counterfeit 1964 Kennedy half dollars and Franklins halves. There are even counterfeit "errors" out there.

 

NGC shows HA fairly recent sales of AU Details examples $139-170. They absolutely will counterfeit it. Even a $20 coin has a market when some scammer can buy it from China for $2.

 

My favorite modern counterfeit I've seen is the rainbow toned, off center struck 1955 DDO Cent.

 

Counterfeit "error" coins, along with the others you mentioned, would be downright insane to see. I've seen a counterfeit Barber half and currently own a scary good counterfeit of a 1918 Walker, but seeing a fake 1964 Kennedy in person would likely send me off the rails.
