Just curious. How long did it take for PCGS to correct its mistake?

Not exactly a new purchase but just got some coins back from grading. Might have posted this raw a few months ago. I dunno. I got exactly what I expected, 1886S, AU58. This date is tough to find uncirculated that doesn't cost an arm and leg. Still not a cheap coin either way.

 

Another. This one PISSED me off, seething hot. I don't see evidence of cleaning, it came back UNC details, cleaned. I see a few hairlines on the obverse behind the cap, but that's typically not the graders target. None on the face or field in front of it. Not only is it uncirculated, it's borderline DMPL, yet no designation. Will be resubmitting, somewhere. I've seen more scratchy 64s than this. Still hot about it!

Another whiff. I knew this one was a whim and a prayer. Fairly graded, the reverse is wiped (and so is back of cap). Normally you only worry about idiots cleaning the obverse face and field. 1899S AU cleaned. It's still a nice coin worth some $$ but serious loss of market value.

 

Added to my collection of graded uncirculated 1886P VAM-1C collection. I guess you'd say I collect that VAM as a subset of my Morgan collection. I got 2 more back, MS64 and MS62. The 62 is the lowest graded of my set. I have one more VAM1-C to submit, and that will make 10 of them total. They are only R3 rarity, but I like them.

 

I bought this lowly 1884O a couple of years ago. I loved the color, and submitted it to ANACS and it came back UNC-Questionable Color. It aggravated me, I did nothing to the coin, I bought it that way. I cracked it out and dipped it and sent to PCGS, same result, even though most of the toning is gone. Even though it's not a valuable Morgan, I still feel like it will straight grade a minimum 65, maybe better without the toning, and once again, that pisses me off. I think I'll throw caution to the wind and dip it one more time. That may ruin it, but at this point I don't care. I'm on a mission. Before and after dipping.

 

Real bummer about this one. It's a beautiful coin, anyway.

 

Can't really say for sure without seeing it in hand, but I'm a bit inclined to agree with PCGS. That patch of hairlines behind her head seems to be a bit more than bag marks and friction. Also there are a couple other hairlines on the jawline, neck and field to the left of the neck that concern me.

 

Like you, I think the hairlines behind the head may have done her in. I don't see anything abnormal on the face or in that side of the field that you don't see on any other PL coin, they all have tiny scratches that are accentuated by the mirror like surface. That back of the cap was probably the knife to the gut.

 

Not really show-worthy BUT since the question was asked...

For 2026 I'm working on filling HUGE holes in my contemporary proof denomination binders. I JUST RECEIVED these proof sets:
2012 clad and silver
2013 clad and silver
2014 clad and silver
2015 clad and silver

2025 saw me:
- assemble a nearly complete set of Lincoln Matte Proofs
- assemble a complete set of Mercury dime proofs
- halfway assembling a set of Liberty Walker proofs...

Well...you get the idea. The remainder of 2026 will be more of the above.

2027 will focus on (additional) 19th century proofs.
