This past week I had the opportunity to visit an actual brick-and-mortar coin store - the first time I can remember doing so! Liberty Bell Coin Investments of Wausau, WI is a small store but well-stocked with all kinds of coins (mostly US.) The owner was very polite, courteous, and generous with his time as I browsed the many trays of coins for sale. Some highlights were a nice 1916-D dime, a couple very attractive Lafayette dollars, and a lovely AU trade dollar, possibly cleaned but with almost proof-like surfaces. Unfortunately I wasn't able to spend nearly as much time and money there as I would have liked, but I did come away with this great-looking 1935 Buffalo nickel. It's got a good strong strike and I like the subtle golden toning. Thoughts on grade? Anyway, it was a lot of fun and I highly recommend the place if you ever have the opportunity to visit!
Tough crowd! It looks Mint State to me, with perhaps some envelope toning on the high points. If it is AU, it’s a 58+.
Grading buffaloes from pictures is devilishly hard! I agree that it looks very nice, but I'm interpreting luster breaks on the high points. That makes it a 58. In hand, moving it under the light, might change my mind!
Interesting to see the varied opinions! High AU or MS is what I would have guessed, not that that narrows it down much. For what it's worth, the cardboard flip it came in was labeled MS63, so at least two members hit that right on the bullseye.
I do think that you may be right, that it's envelope toning not wear on some of the high points. From what I can tell, the luster remains unbroken across all surfaces.
