I've been thinking of expanding into (low end, but above junk) Standing Liberty Quarters, and I'm trying to learn how to grade them. With the bare minimum of knowledge from a book, I just purchased one. How might you grade this 1929-D?

    Thanks!

I'm thinking... VF30? Ish? But I don't have much experience grading these. Most of the ones I've handled are G or lower. Sometimes much lower.

Per PCGS Photograde, it falls higher than VF25 but less than VF30. So, albeit a bit unorthodox, it is around VF28. It has design element wear lending to a lesser than VF30 grade…IMO.

edit to add: NumisMedia/FMV has it valued around $25.00 USD.

Your SLQ is confounding me. It has 25-30 details. However, the obverse is completely missing the dots and dashes around the inner circumference of the rim. This detail is typically visible all the way down to 8-10 condition.

Good point. The dots and dashes are not completely gone but some of it is. And, using that metric would tend to make me lower my previous assessment to maybe VF15/20. This is taking into account what is/isn’t there of the detail that remains. @dwhiz

I’d be at a lower grade on this one, like F12, 15 tops. Too much wear on Liberty. Can’t see her toes and that’s a G grade.

I looked and looked again then went to my Red Book and other guides. VG-8, that's the best I can do but it's just my opinion. I am very much in favor of being wrong! Good luck.
