Well, I just bought this. Pictures aren't that great, but I think I paid accordingly. Does anyone know about the holder it's in? What do you think, am I a fool? Sellers Photos:
The photos aren't great, but the halos around the 4th 5th and 6th stars kind of stand out. Also maybe a scratch between star 12 and 13, and between star 13 and liberty's bun.
I'm glad I bought it. I'd say it's PF-62 or 63. It almost looks like a die crack, but it's not raised. Maybe it was struck through a string from the die polishing cloth? There is a similar mark on Liberty's neck.
Only the second 8 seems to be doubled. The obverse is pretty clean, but unfortunately the reverse was wiped. Probably by a collector of olden days. The lines don't really stand out, but they're there none the less.
That was common practice back in the day and should be somewhat expected on old proofs. They're not graded details unless the cleaning is severe, but it does affect the grade which is why I think it's PF-63 or 62.
Nice coin - second set of pictures makes it look nice, but also shows the flaws more on it. I am not sure what a tpg might do on a grade. Good luck.
If it was just the reverse could it be cabinet friction on the old velvet lined drawers? I'm still going with a PR 62/3 straight if it's not jarring in hand. Nice RPD!
