Religious paper money, Symbolic Funeral Tickets.
They are burnt as offerings to the dead.

I like your Hell Note, it is nice and colorful. I have some but they are not nearly as colorful as yours. I don't really know much about them, but as mentioned I think they are funeral ceremonial items, I don't know the details. I am not aware of any kind of cataloging of these. Do you have a pic of the other side?

I was curious enough to query Gemini AI about it. This was the response:

    Identification
    • Cultural Origin/Country: Culturally Chinese. These notes are produced and used across mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and within Chinese diaspora communities worldwide.

    • Language: Traditional Chinese characters.

    • Date of Issue: Undated. Unlike official government fiat currency, ritual paper money does not carry a specific year of minting or issue. While the graphic layout mimics mid-to-late 20th-century banknote aesthetics, these items are continuously mass-produced for contemporary spiritual practices.
    Inscriptions & Visual Breakdown
The note features several traditional design hallmarks engineered to mimic real legal tender:

    • Top Header (read right-to-left): 冥都銀行 (Míngdū Yínháng) – Translates to "Bank of the Underworld Capital" or "Hell Bank."

    • Center Denomination: 壹仟萬 (Yī Qiān Wàn) – Represents 10,000,000 (Ten Million), matching the numeric values in the bottom corners. Hell banknotes are notoriously famous for their massive, hyper-inflated denominations.

    • Bottom Text (read right-to-left): 通用冥幣 (Tōngyòng Míngbì) – Translates to "Underworld Currency for General Use."

    • Right Portrait: The Jade Emperor (玉皇大帝), the supreme ruler of heaven and the afterlife in Chinese folk religion and Taoism. He is depicted in traditional imperial robes wearing a mianguan (a ceremonial flat-topped cap with rows of hanging beads).

    • Left Image: A stylized Chinese guardian lion (commonly called a foo dog).

    • Serial Numbers: The pair of serial numbers near the top center of A44888 is highly symbolic. In Chinese culture, the number 4 is a homophone for "death" (appropriate for a funeral note), while the number 8 is a powerful symbol of wealth and good fortune.
    What is it?
It goes by varying names: hell note, joss paper, ghost money, and spirit money In Chinese tradition, ancestral veneration involves providing for relatives in the afterlife. It is believed that when a person passes away, their spirit resides in a realm where they still require financial security to live comfortably, pay off karmic debts, or smooth over relations with underworld magistrates.

To send funds to the deceased, family members ritually burn these paper notes at funerals, during annual ancestral visits to gravesites (Qingming / Tomb Sweeping Festival), and during the Hungry Ghost Festival. The smoke carries the spiritual essence of the money to the afterlife.
