I can't really grade Morgans well and I know different years have different strike qualities I'm not will versed in. That being said, I like the luster and said 62.
Good guess, close to mine. Look at it this way: The TPGs give a LOT of leeway to Morgans due to bag marks that equate to a lot of “cheek chatter” and the like. There is a lot of decent luster remaining, and although there is some flattening of the details and shows smudging of the fields, there are almost no signs of wear on some of the highest points like the tops of the cotton bolls on the obverse and the breast and tops of the legs on the reverse. So, even though it looks “rough” it sits in the MS category albeit a lower one, hence my grade given of MS61. I think most folks would tend to agree with this assessment, but one really has to do a lot of work with Morgans (and Peace) to understand. The TPGs will throw a monkey wrench into the mix at the least provocation.
The answer is AU Details - Cleaned. I can't really see anything too obvious in the picture. It might be a lot more obvious in person. To me it looks like the fields belong to an AU-58 coin, but the devices are not. The cheek looks very dull, but not worn like a low AU grade.
The pictures fooled me into thinking it'd be an AU-58; I've had some AU Morgans and they look just like this. I'm with you, nothing too obvious via the pictures, but still a really nice coin.
