Is that a scratch on the reverse? I'm at MS62.

I am sorry for responding so late, the scratch is on the case just to clarify :)

My grade is MS-63 based off what I see or think I see. I think the pictures are not sure as much luster as I think there might be.

Now chatgpt had a lot to say : :)
From this photo alone, I'd estimate AU-58 to MS-61, with the most likely grade being AU-58.

    What I see
This is a 1915 Indian Head Quarter Eagle ($2.50 gold).

    Positive attributes
    • Strong detail on the feathers and eagle.
    • No obvious heavy circulation wear.
    • Lettering and devices are sharp.
    • Surfaces appear relatively clean for the type.
    What concerns me
The biggest issue is the appearance of the high points:

    • On the obverse, the cheek and the highest feather tips look slightly flat.
    • On the reverse, the eagle's shoulder and upper leg area appear a little subdued.
    • The coin lacks the strong, uniform mint frost I'd expect for a typical MS-62 or MS-63.
That said, Indian Head gold is notoriously difficult to grade from photographs because:

    1. The incuse design hides wear.
    2. Lighting can make luster breaks look like wear.
    3. Slab plastic can obscure surface texture.
    My grading range
    Grade Probability
    AU-58 45%
    MS-60 25%
    MS-61 20%
    MS-62 8%
    MS-63+ 2%
    If this is already slabbed
Given the look of the surfaces and strike, I would not be surprised by:

    • NGC AU-58
    • PCGS AU-58
    • NGC MS-61
    • PCGS MS-61
I would be surprised if it were MS-63 or higher based on these images.

One question: is this coin in an older NGC "fatty" holder or a modern holder? Sometimes older-holder Indian quarter eagles can have surprisingly conservative grades, and knowing the actual assigned grade would help.
    ---------------------

I asked it "what do you grade this coin" - an no S$$$ knowing the assigned kind of defeats the purpose. Just something to try while I listen to the rain.
