Maybe, someone was trying to plate the coin. There have been a couple posted here over the years. The first photo looks like that. The second picture doesn't show well.
I bought a modern cent. Finally thought it over enough, and decided to include the Shield design in my Type Set. This is the coin I chose.

Ok, I used to tell my staff that were in my training classes that the only stupid question was the un-asked one. So, I'll practice what I preached. What is it? And, I'm guessing there are 2 of them?
It is a hammered(spooned) cent I made with a small hammer on an anvil. There is only one coin. It is approx 16x16mm. I made some round ones too. This one is 15mm now
