I was wondering if these cardboard holders were any good. I have a number of wheat cents and some other coins that I would like to better protect rather than having them stored loose with a bunch of other coins. Also where is a good place to get them? Is there any brands that are better or does it matter? I saw some on Amazon that were fairly cheap.
Also I have some jars from stuff like salsa or pickles and I was wondering if it would be fine to clean them out and use them to store coins in.
Both are used on a regular basis for collecting. Flatten the staples when you use the 2x2 cardboard flips...you don't want a staple scratching another coin.
Cardboard flips are fine to use, especially for lower grade and common coins. They also pair nicely with pages you can buy for a D ring binder. They're also quite cheap. As far as jars, I think they'll be ok. Just ensure they are completely dry before putting coins in them. A drop of water can wreak havoc on some metals.
As in all the comments above, they are good holders to be used for a regular collector.. They also have 1 1/2 X 1 1/2 for smaller coins (25c and lower)rather than the 2 x 2's
Not really. All cardboard 2X2's are about the same and are a fine storage method. The staples are the weak link for two reasons. If they aren't flattened, they can and will scratch a coin. What I consider a bigger problem though is that staples will rust over the years in a humid environment and that rust will attack your coin..... So keep the staples flat and put your 2X2's in something dry like a Tupperware box and you will be good.
The cardboard 2X2 are good for storing lower value coins. Super for world coin to be displayed in albums. As mentioned before, be sure to carefully flatted the staples to avoid damaging coins. This is an example of why. Notice the nice scratch between the T and Y. This was caused by a un flatten staple. Turned a nice collector coin into a bullion coin.
Oh, I forgot to say that, using 1 1/2 X 1 1/2's, you get 30 coins to a page, rather than 20 with 2 x 2's. At one time I had over 2000 Canada Victoria large cents and the 50% more coins per page REALLY helped.
The holders are fine nowadays. They used to use PVC plastic inserts that could damage coins, but after mylar, they work fine. The first ones that I used had separate stacks of the cardboard and inserts. You had to fold the inserts, position the in the cardboard, and very carefully staple it together. The inserts were longer, and had to be trimmed after assembly.
