Being that I am old school, I view slabbing as protection for future generations of collectors. It isn't a money making tool to me. A lot of these would be better served in snap-tights, but at ten bucks a slab, I'll let ICG entomb them for me. And besides, I think a relatively blemish free coin should be protected. I'll send them sometime next week and when they come back I will report how I scored. Only imaged the obverse since I am limited to the number of attachments. 1804 1/2 Cent Spike Chin..... I totally agree as to not being a money making tool. I don't prefer slabbed coins, except, I do agree that you can be reasonably sure it's real, and it does help protect them. But, I thought it cost more than $10?
The top tier guys do cost substantially more. Insider has us a CoinTalk deal set up at ten bucks a slab at ICG. Just write on the submission form that it is the CoinTalk deal.
I have to say one thing….. My eyes must be absolutely atrocious any more. Now that I am looking at these in photo form that I can enlarge at will they all have way more chatter than they did to my naked eye.
Don't be too hard on your eyes. A reasonably good quality, close-up photo often seems to highlight and exaggerate even the slightest imperfections, ones you'd never be able to see in hand. Fellow CT member and professional coin photographer @Denis Richard recently created a thread on this very phenomenon - https://www.cointalk.com/threads/when-high-resolution-hurts-the-case-for-showing-less.421690/
The Morgan and Peace Dollars all have some chatter but they all still appear to be within your grade estimates of AU 58 to MS 64.
Welllllll..... I see ICG has posted my results. Let's see how we scored: 1804 1/2 Cent Spike Chin..... F20 ICG 25BN 1832 Half Dime F30 Details, Cleaned ICG 35 1908 V Nickel MS62 ICG 63 42/41 Merc VF30 I don't follow this one. The web says MS-10. 1963 Proof Franklin PF64 ICG PF65 82-S Morgan MS64 ICG 64 85 Morgan MS63 ICG 60 02-O Morgan MS64 ICG 60 22 Peace MS64 ICG 64 23 Whisker Jaw Peace AU58 ICG58 I was pretty much spot on with all but the Morgans and I am admittedly weak on Morgans. Rather anxious about what "MS-10-" means for my 42/41 Merc. That was the cream of the crop in this submission.
I’m not sure about all this Randy, but the grading scale for coins has always been from a P1 to MS 70, and that’s the Shelton greeting scale. Other items like sports cards are graded on a scale of one to 10. If I’m not mistaken a number of years ago NGC started grading coins on a scale of one to 10. Their intention was to attract younger collectors who are used to a 10 point scale in grading cards and other items. They’re therefore a 10 would be the same as a MS 70. Which doesn’t make sense to me because I’ve never heard of a 41/42 Dime getting an MS 70 grade. Have you tried calling your local coin dealer and asking him?
No…. I rather think they haven’t completely updated that submission part of the website yet. I been checking pretty regularly and it wasn’t there this morning. I think more info is coming on that coin…. At least I hope so!
It's obviously not MS but much better than VG-10 - I agree with your VF-30, and nothing that would warrant a details grade, at least not on the obverse. Any issues with the reverse?
It is some sort of glitch on the ICG email as I recall @dwhiz posted something like this in a thread earlier this year. The number is correct and the holder should say VG-10 (not MS-10).
I think ANACS used to give MS60 DETAILS for anything that didn't have wear but did have other problems. Any chance ICG might have seen problems on those two Morgans?
That maybe true, but when it comes to trading or selling you get substantially less pay more get allot more.
