Do any of you still have some nice coins from your early days as a collector?

I started collecting around 1960 and began to buy coins from dealers around 1963. I sold a lot of pieces in the early 1970s when I thought I was a dealer, but I still have a few of those pieces left. Here are few of them.

I bought this 1900 $2.50 gold piece from Rogers Photo which was located in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. It was around 1965. The breat and butter for the store was photographic supplies, but the ower also bought and sold a few coins. It was graded "BU" back then. Today it's in an NGC MS-62 holder.



I bought this 1853 half cent from the coin counter at Gimbels Department store in Philadelphia. Believe it or not, the grade maked on it was "VF." Today it's in an NGC MS-62, Brown holder.



This 1832 dime was one of my favorites. I'm afraid that I messed with it when I was kid so it's kind of messed up now. It is still raw.



This 1928 $2.50 gold is in my raw Indian Quarter eagle set.



This was my first $20 gold piece. I bought this in 1964. It is now in an NGC MS-64 holder.

Depends on my definition of my "early days" I guess. I collected US coins for 30 years from 5 to 35 with enthusiasm and no money, and now ancients for 22 years. From my US days I still have SL halves XF to AU, bust halves AU, roll of BU 1939 D nickels, etc. Decent collection considering my income I suppose. No gold, my only gold coins I bought after income went up.

 

Define early days.
I'd say yes because I rarely ever sell, but the early days I didn't have much money...no money, like Driver Carries NO Cash because he's married money even Years after the divorce

 

I have some Ike Proof Dollars and some Mint/Proof sets from the 1970's given as Christmas or Birthday presents.

Still have my original 1/10th oz. Krugerrand that I bought in 1981 with the excess tuition from my freshman year of college. That is my actual 1st purchase of a coin that I can recall -- before that, just gifts.

 

Yes! Most all of the Lincoln cents in my Whitman were sourced from school lunch money in the early 70's. I had a small dealer between my school and my house. He had a big jar and if I remember correctly I could get either two or three wheats from that jar for a nickel.... Of course the rare dates weren't filled until I was a grown man but the majority of those wheats can be traced back to a pimple faced coin addicted kid that skipped many school lunches to fill his Whitman.

 

I didn't collect nice coins in my early days. Strictly from circulation. I have most of them still - wheat cents and Jefferson nickels.

This is my first coin given to me in 1948 by my aunt. It started the hobby and I still have it. Like most collectors, I never bought coins, I found them in circulation.

 

Unfortunately no as my ex wife sold my entire collection.

 

I still have some wheaties that I got from my father and a few Franklin's that my grandmother gave me back in the '60s. I passed many on to nieces and nephews but still have some, but they have been mixed in with a few purchases I have made over the years.

 

No - nothing from my early days as a collector. The closest I come is a coin and currency set with star note in it - not sure what year it is. My early days was just pulling wheat cents, nickels and any silver I found. Then I started buying from US mint - just about everything they came out with. I really did not get into true collecting until early 2000 - made lots of mistakes, but improved some I think. When gold was around 2000 and platinum was around the same(can't really remember) I sold all that modern stuff. Now what I do still have are some of the whitman albums me, my dad and brother put together. Eventually for the wheat cents I bought a dansco album - combined the best into one album and bought the key dates. I need to do the same for Jeff nickels. Those albums stay with me til the end. And most of the coins are low grades which I am fine with.

This is the only one from my childhood, about 1965. Like most, I had no money but I did buy this from a coin shop in Kansas City. No idea what I paid for it. I'm amazed I still have it. It hung around in sock drawers, etc. until I started collecting again in 2016.

 

I still have most from my earliest collecting days. Some were given to me by my parents, some mercs, walkers and franklins from Mom. Dad worked in Venezuela after WWII and brought home one of each denom. from there which he gifted me. When my aunt passed I inherited a few whitman blue books, indians, lincolns and buffalos. I still have a few widows mites that I got from the YN program in the ANA. Of course I squirreled away anything 'good' from circulation. Most of the circ finds were traded away for better coins at coin clubs or local dealers.
