I saw this two weeks ago and bought it as a birthday gift to me from me. It looks a little rough around the rim but that normal when a nickel is minted on a cent planchet.
It’s a 1976-D Nickel that was minted on a copper planchet that was probably stuck in the machine. Since they are no longer minting Cents, you won’t be seeing any coins being minted on a cent planchet. I can only imagine as I’ve never seen one, a nickel being minted on a zinc planchet.
It’s labeled as MS 64 RB for red brown. That would be due to the copper planchet. The color of the cooling actually has a mild pink hint to it, but that’s also normal when this happens.
You’ll notice that they noted on the label 2.8 grams for its weight. The rough looking rim is that way because part of the design is missing. There’s just not enough room on a cent planchet to mint everything that’s on a nickel. When their slaughtering her numbers close to the rim that causes the rough look because they’re not all there, a piece of it is missing.

Would that be a copper nickel?

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

It is lucky you were able to get the full readable date on there. Off center and off planchet errors are far more desirable when they have the date.

You are so correct. When I looked at this coin I saw what looked like a well centered strike, not off center at all. Very unusual for a cent planchet in the chamber used to strike nickels as the nickel’s collar is much larger than cent.

Those type of wrong planchet errors are fascinating! That's nice example.

I've shown the my examples that I acquired from Fred Weinberg the first time I met him here in NYC..
