Hi everyone, I am picking up a lot of info here and I really appreciate it. I save some coins in the plastic tubes (rolls) some are circulated and some not. On the nicer coins and especially the ms60+ I use sterile cotton balls to stuff into the tubes to proevent the coins from bouncing around or rubbing against each other. Just the standard drug store quality cotton balls. Is this OK? I keep reading about things here that seem somewhat logical but are not good for the coins so I thought I had beeter be smart enough to ask. If this is not a good idea, is there something else I could use to fill in the space until the roll is full? Thanks as always for your wonderful guidance.
I just fill the rolls to the top with coins, in cents it is about 52-53 depending on the type of coin tubes.
If the cotton affects the coins, most likely only the one or two touching the cotton will be affected... Clinker
All may depend on the cleanliness of the cotton. Don't forget, cotton is picked from plants, goes through all types of cleaning, dying, disenfecting types of processes. If you use the type the hospitals use, should be sterile enough for coins. They put it on wounds and they always put it on my arms when they finish with those stupid needles. Hasn't hurt me yet. May be worse for coins though. Hey, maybe that is why there are so many infections happening at hospitals. My suggestion is to just stand them up somewhere where they will not be banging around. That way you could put 1, 10, 40 etc of some coins in there and not worry about banging together. I don't see why anyone would put a coin of MS-anything in a plastic roll instead of a 2x2 or similar item. Now here is an idea. Place your coins in the plastic tube, heat the tube with a torch until it scrinks. The coins will never rattle again. :goofer:
