This morning I found this cut half while metal detecting. I can't make my mind up whether it's a William 1st type 7 or a William 2nd type 1. I think it might be a William 2nd. Any help appreciated.

    It's a short cross.

Most closely resembles William II BMC 1 (S-1258) from what I can tell.

Thank you for your feedback. I'm now more confident about it being a William 2nd. I'm amazed at its condition after over 900 years buried in the soil. It only needed a quick soak under a running tap to remove the mud and reveal its beauty.

I can make out the ǷILLELM REX part, mint seems to be Winchester (ǷINC), but moneyer is unclear.

With some of William II's coins and a lot more of Henry I and especially Stephen coins, you are happy to be able to figure out the king. Those kings issued terrible coins.

    These are "nice."

Henry I Henry's coins should have improved after the "Christmas present" he gave to a group of moneyiers who were short changing the silver in the coins. To put it nicely, "He got medieval on their butts."
