Lysimachos Tetradrachm

This coin just came in the mail! Definitely one of the most exciting purchases I've ever made as a collector and without a doubt the most beautiful coin in my collection as of now.



KINGS of THRACE. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (28mm, 16.79 g, 12h). Pergamon mint. Struck circa 287/6-282 BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΛYΣIMAXOY, Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, spear diagonally in background; crescent to outer left, KEA monogram in circle to inner left. Arnold-Biucchi, Pergamene 12–3 var. (O3/R– [unlisted rev. die]); Thompson 217; Müller –; SNG France –; Meydancikkale 2677 (same obv. die). GVF.

This coin was previously attributed as Thompson 166, but that type has a bee under Athena's arm and a similar, but not identical, monogram in the exergue. We were unable to find another example of this type.

I love the high relief on this type, especially the upwards facing eyes of Alexander.

Obv: Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, wearing horn of Ammon.
Rev: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ / ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ. Athena seated left on throne, holding Nike and spear over shoulder. ΠPΕ monogram outer left, ΔK monogram in exergue.
