Yesssss!! => I scored three CNG targets today ... they're all fairly humble, but I'm definitely happy with all three!! This is the first of the three wins ... yup, it's another cool BCD Thessaly example (yah, I never seem to get sick of adding these comfy silver winners to my collection!) I love the obverse and reverse ... oh, and I am always a fan of slightly crystalline examples (they may be a bit more fragile, but man, they are always so fricken pretty, to me anyway) A great bridled horse on the obverse and a super cool reverse showing Athena in "running stance" with spear and shield => an animal and sweet weapons!! ... a double-whammy!! THESSALY, Perrhaiboi. AR Obol Circa 450-400 BC Struck circa 450-430 BC Olosson or Phalanna mint Diameter: 12 mm Weight: 0.87 grams Obverse: Bridled horse rearing left Reverse: Π-Ε-Ρ-Α, Athena in running stance right, holding shield and spear; all within incuse square Reference: BCD Thessaly I 1242; BCD Thessaly II 552.2; HGC 4, 151 Other: 6h … VF, minor granularity From the BCD Collection Please feel free to pile-on whatever gets you going tonight ... horses, Athena, Thessaly, crystalline coins, etc, etc ... it's all good, my coin-friends
Well, I admit this may be a bit of a difficult assignment for some of you (ummm, that's reverse psychology) ... I'll go first and post a few of my cool Thessaly silver examples ... ... yah, it's pretty fricken obvious that I'm in love with this coin-fabric, eh? (it just makes me feel good) ...
Love that coin! I had early bid on it when I first scanned the auction last week, at the opening price just to make note of it. When I checked back before the auction closed I saw that it was going to join the X6 Collection . Some assorted Thessalian silvers, all Ex BCD... Kierion: The Oitaitoi: Lamia: Trikka: Pharkadon: Pherai:
Seriously? ... I never noticed that it said Zumbly when I must have outbid your initial bid (hey, you should have brushed me back if I crossed the line, my friend) ... send me a PM next time if I accidentally pee on your property!!
Hey, no worries, I'm glad you scored it. I don't use my CT handle - I don't want anyone not bidding (or aggro-bidding!) just because they see my name against a coin. Also, for CNG auctions, I'm lazy and am always making "placeholder bids" just to note coins that catch my eye. I know the initial bids are almost always exceeded and I can figure out which ones I'm serious about closer to hammer time. Anyway, very cool score!
LOVELY @stevex6 Terrific posts everyone!! Beside my oft-posted drachm of Larissa....I seem to have none of offer
Congrats @stevex6 on the capture!!! Must be a be-aitch to balance vehicles (merely a "want") vs. Ancients (a definite NEED in life!!!) Looks like you are winning with the great new coins you have been posting! I am learning from the Master! Thessaly Larissa 344-337 BCE AR Obol 0.68g Nymph Larissa Horse Grazing SNG Cop 1 COMMENT: I love this little gal because of its history: Phillip II of Makedon was the Mastermind of several military, political, and economic FIRSTS for the Western World. Brilliant-brilliant man, who was underrated as perhaps one of the West's most significant influencers of Western History down to this day. He was the Father of Alexander III who went on to be the Great solely because of his Father's incredible vision. He controlled Thessaly (at their REQUEST), but Thessaly became a problem child because they were doing economically MUCH better than they reported to Philip... BECAUSE he noticed they were producing MASS amounts of COINAGE! He had to get down to Larissa and put down a rebellion... ("Cat's away, mouse will play" type thing.) LOL, this coin was probably part of the evidence Philip II had to "Go Medieval" on the Thessalians! (Wow, did I just say "Medieval"? I should have said "Dark Ages" on them. ) (Sorry @FitzNigel , I had to pull your leg, Dude... ) I have read a lot about Philip II's history, but a recent book is excellent: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander Richard A. Gabriel EVEN BETTER: This Obol was given to me in kind friendship from a great coin-friend!
All good - I wish I could show off a coin I had bid on in CNG, but I low-balled it and was outbid. That's okay, there's a nicer example that's now on my radar...
Nice stuff, fellas!! ... as always, thanks for making the effort to post your own coins (I love seeing other people's coins!!) ... it never gets old
Sweet coin Steve, you have some awesome examples from Thessaly. I only have this one from Pharsalos also from the BCD collection.
you guys are great ... thanks for the extra coin add-ons Ajax => man, I love that coin-type (obverse & reverse are both classics!)
