I won these yesterday on the Stacks Bowers auction. I only bid on the lot because the 1876 Quarter has my grand daughters initials on it. and since her birthday is coming up it will be one of her gifts Counterstamped 19th Century United States Coins.jpg

One of mine that still defies attribution . . . .

In my mind it's too well made to be a 'one off' or individually hand stamped creation.

Nice counterstamps, dwhiz. Not familiar with the Harner stamp but Hoff was a merchant who sold nearly everything imaginable over a long career in retail. He was in Auburn, NY Syracuse, NY and Pittsburgh, Pa at various times.

If you want to Google him you should come up with a lot of info.

Neato. It's always cool when one can match up all three of a modern person's initials with the ones on a 19th century love token or counterstamped piece. I once had an 1861 love token dime with my "RWS" initials.

    Two
initials are relatively easy. Three- and in the proper sequence, not in a monogram- is much tougher.

I've seen a Bell Wilcot counterstamp before but don't recall where or when, Z. Not sure if it was yours or not but I remember it because it's so unusual. It's not listed in Brunk, Rulau, or any other reference that I'm aware of.

I think it's quite possible that Bell Wilcot is a company name rather than an individuals' name. Maybe you could approach your research from that angle.

I've done a few Google-fu searches and pretty much came up empty. This is the only one I've seen. I have posted it up before a few years ago on an alternate forum. That discussion went nowhere. It was probably mine that you've seen.

Since this counterstamp is on a silver dollar I wouldn’t think it’s new but certainly around the time frame on the coin. Very nice example and certainly a well done counterstamp. The letters themselves and the arc of all the letters put together are very uniform.

Only the L looks a bit out of shape compared to the rest of the letters, Nice Peace dollar.
