Are 1934-S Peace Dollars undervalued in MS?

I understand that prices for 1934-S PDs in MS have risen in the past few years. I am considering an MS 63/64 example for my set.

In your opinion, do you think that this coin is still undervalued or do you presume the price will drop for these coins.

I let my fortune teller borrow my crystal ball. He sold it and ran away to Palmyra.
My guess is that a truly MS 1934-S Peace dollar will not drop much in value in the near future.

The prices start marching north pretty quick in MS grades. Pops for 34-S are significantly below other dates in MS, so it would seem that it should be the most expensive. The thing is, it's priced at several multiples of those with the next lower pops (28, 27-D, 24-S). I don't know what the future will bring for 34-S in any grade, but for the kind of money it'll take to get one, make sure it's high quality with great eye-appeal. Ugly ones will always be discounted. There are a few coming up in the Stack's auction at the end of the month. From the pictures, there are coins I like and coins I don't like. Will the AU58+ be a steal? Who knows? Do you know if auction appearances of coins in the grade you want have become more or less frequent? This could indicate if we're in a seller's or buyer's market.

Your fortune teller ran into my fortune teller, and now they both have balls.

I have been watching these for about five years as I need one. The prices have really gone up in the past two years. I find it funny because you can find a lot of them, or better the ones for sell that you will find are generally MS 64. I rarely see a 63. You can find several 62's and 58's.

I've noticed that too. I am considering just picking up an AU-58, but I would probably always be looking for an MS example. Not sure if now is the right time to buy though....

((With my luck, prices will continue to go up and I'll be kicking myself again))

Well about 4-5 years ago I had a dealer at a show, show me a very nice 34-S in 63 in a PCGS holder. I think the thing was a 64 blast white few marks. It was around 2900 dollars. i thought I could trade in two ounces of gold and a couple of hundred bucks and buy it, but I got cold feet and never went back the following day.

Man I'm kicking myself for that now.

    It's under-valued if I'm selling and over-valued if I'm buying. ;)

I think all Peace dollars are under valued compared to Morgans. Or Morgans are way over valued. IMO.

The 34-S is flat pricey in MS grades. On top of that, the 35-S seems to typically go for above price guides in MS -- at least decent looking examples. Maybe because they are the last "real" silver dollars from SF.

I’ve seen some AU-58’s that were better looking than lower grade MS’s. The price was a lot lower too. I would look for CAC certified AU’s with good eye appeal and good strike. San Francisco minted Peace Dollars were known for having weak strikes.

I think Peace dollars are a fairly unpopular series, generally, and so the price is fairly stagnant. If you look at the price chart for the 34S in 63 over the past 15 years, it is fairly steady (it bounces up and down a few hundred bucks, but that's about it). It has performed slightly better in 64.

If you want to buy one, I'd look for an attractive, eye appealing example at a good price - and I wouldn't worry too much about minor fluctuations in value. I also wouldn't expect a significant appreciation if you were to buy one.
