Does anyone know what the initial price of the 3 piece gold set was from the mint?

Does anyone have an idea on what the platinum set will cost?

What is with the 3 piece ASE slump?

I think dealers and such are still selling them and they haven't fully been used up in people's collections yet, I guess it is all about patience right now.

Someone mentioned it but any idea if smaller denomination gold buffaloes will be released and if so, when?

I'm new to CoinTalk, so I don't know a whole lot about coins, or collecting in general. But I'll help out where I can. I often use the Mint's website to get information. The price for the 3 piece set was probably the american anniversary set from last year. From the www.usmint.gov website, on left, click on button "Press Room". Scroll down to the search field, type in Anniversary. You'll see the press release with prices for the 3 coin set.

3 peice slump? the gold set is bringing what double the money? while yes it is a significant amount of cash, going for 8x the price of the silver right now, you must remember it started out 26x more expensive than the silver set. The silver set is now going for approx $600 so it has increased in value 6x from what it was.

I think he means the fact that the set has dropped from $600 to about $450 or so now...
I have noticed for many of the fast risers last year and this year that they suddenly pick up in price, overshoot coz of everyone trying to get in and then fall back to some sort of plateau... The 2006 W ASE went from $20 to $60 suddenly ... stayed at $50 for 2-3 months, jumped to $80 in 1 week, dropped and stayed at $70 for 2 months, jumped to $110 in 1-2 weeks.. fell back to $100 for a month... etc etc
I think $600 was the overshoot this time...

If you bought at $600 your in trouble... but if you got them from the mint... I really wouldnt complain! Maybe they'll jump up again later... but from what i have seen is that it is best to SELL in the buying frenzy with a price rise, rather than get more...

you have to be patient with this thought. Sets are still available from dealers and you have to wait until people buy for their collection and sell at no price, slowly eliminating the supply of these for people who want them.

The platinum set is rumored to be 2 (1/2 ozs.) Proof and reverse Proof and likley around $1400 - $1500.

There will not be a platinum set.

Summer dulldrums. Wait until the Fall/winter it will come back.

    Hi andrew289,

I have been waiting for the above to happen for some time, but you state that it is not going to happen!

I will appreciate if you could please provide us with your source of information, if possible, and if you consider that to be a reliable source. I have been saving for the above offering but if it is not going to happen, I will plan accordingly.

    Thanks!

The above was a statement of personal opinion and nothing more.

The buffalo fractionals have been on the chopping block for months (as reported in CW, I believe) and I just don't see it happening. The platinum set has also been doubtful for quite some time. I saw a post on another site from a guy who "had an undisclosed mint contact" that said the issue had been scrapped. I don't believe everything I read on the Internet but I think it's a reasonable to consider. The mint is a very busy place right now and they are struggling to keep up. The poor quality of the President dollars and the Congression flogging has taken a toll. Also, the minting of the 08 bullion coins will begin soon, if it hasn't already. These have taken up a lot of time and attention. We can only wait and see what they will roll out next.

Personally, I'm confident, in my opinion, but absolutely nobody else should be. If by some miracle, the numismatic gods smile on us and grace us with both fractional buffaloes and a 2 coin plat anniversay set, I'd be the first to eat crow.

Keep on saving Alhas, "If you save for it, it WILL be issued" (I hope).
Until hope that old Alberlight has the inside track on the inside scoop. I've never know anyone to type in all caps and NOT mean what they say.

    Cheers.

I'll see you inline online for the release of the Jefferson Spouce ...yippeeeeeeee!

i didn't get a chance to buy the gold anniversary set, and i hope to buy a platinum set if the mint offers it. i just bought the 2007 buffalo proof coin this year....love it! if the mint introduces smaller sizes, i will definately be a loyal customer.

    Great news alberlight.

I'll have to start skimming from the till. I could use about 4-5 of those sets to pay for my daughters college tuition next year. The silver sets paid for it last year. To bad nobody collects Platinum ..these will most likely double but that's good enough for me.

The bad thing is that the mintage will most likely be 15,000 which will make it a common by Platinum mintages. The mint would be plumb crazy to only mint 5,000.
