The reverse of this Seleucid coin shows an elephant heading right under which we can read Basileos Antioxoy. Easy so far. But the obverse has an unusual face, even in hand where the bust is very clear. The head is overflown with tresses of hair dispersed equally to right and left. I would like to know who is the unusual dude on obverse. Thanks..
The obverse is a facing gorgoneian on a Macedonian shield. Try searching CNG's archives for "AE, shield, elephant" and you'll find several like it.
Thanks TIF. I guessed so from the beginning but noticed that all gorgoneians in my possession were different than this. I'll be searching.
