    Who's J.B.? I'd have bought it.

I'm not familiar with this one but these initials-only counterstamps are almost impossible to attribute. From a research standpoint there's almost nothing to go on.

By the look of yours I'd say the stamp was applied at least 20 or 30 years after the coin was struck. The font style, particularly the odd shaped J, is unusual but still quite old. I'm sorry I can't offer more in way of an ID.

That’s one nice looking counter stamped coin. Not sure who JB is but this is not the first coin I’ve seen with these initials. He was probably a merchant of some sort.

    Maybe Jim Beam?

The origins of Jim Beam date back to 1795, when Jacob Beam sold his first barrel of bourbon, then known as "Old Jake Beam Sour Mash". While the family has produced whiskey since 1795, the brand was officially renamed "Jim Beam" in 1943 to honor James B. Beam, who rebuilt the distillery after Prohibition.

John booth was born decades later after that coin was minted so it rules him out ;)

Your counterstamp was issued by a modern counterstamper with those initials. I won't tell you his name because he wants to remain unidentified.
    Nice coin, Z.

Brunk lists several JB counterstamps but none of them match the style of this one.

That 7 is very high and looks like a 6 under it. As Lord M mentioned.
There are 2 varieties of this the pointed 1 and the blunt 1. The blunt 1
being VERY valuable. I would determine that first.

I was looking little more since my post and I believe it’s on the modern side because the date range is very large for the same counterstamp.
