People have posted some circulated large cents asking for a opinions. Some people think I am too tough. Having just completed a date a set of large cents from 1793 to 1857, here are some raw coins that I bought from various sources, mostly EAC dealers with the grades the dealers gave them. I must have agreed because I bought them . 1796 This was graded VF-30. 1800 This was graded Fine-15 by PCGS (Later cracked out for an album). I bought this Three Errors 1801 large cent at an EAC auction many years ago. The net grade is VG. All of my Classic coins are graded. This 1811, which is a better date, is graded VF-25 by PCGS. Here are three dates in a row, all graded at various levels of VF. 1824 VF-30 1825, VF-35 1826 VF-25 1832 VF-35 1842 EF-40 1857 MS-64, Brown There they are. You can have at them.
I haven't had much experience grading Large Cents, but I'll take a stab at them. 1796 Detail-wise I think it's XF, but the rims seem a bit weak and there is a fair amount of surface imperfections. I'd call it VF-35. 1800 VG-10 1801 Fine Details, Cleaned 1811 VF-25 1824 VF-35 1825 XF-40 1826 VF-30 1832 VF-35 1842 Close call for me between XF-45 & AU-50. 1857 MS-64/65
The 1796 didn't have much for rims to start with. That was one of the problems with the early U.S. coins. They didn't have rims to protect the design devices. That piece was net graded by an EAC dealer. It would probably get "EF details, scratched" from a slab company.
all very nice coins with no issues. Collection to be proud of. For a collection like that that you are going to keep indefinitely or pass down to your family job well done.
I am not sure what I would say. Actually I do. I see the potential for all of those photos to be better in hand than the snapshot provided. We are succumbing to the digital age of impression.
Well the 1801 and the 1825 I do not like the color in the photos - does not mean in had I might have a different opinion. As for the rest -I really like the 1811, but I think is closer to VF-20. And yeah the 1796 has some fine scratches on it, but I still like it. Do you recall dealer netted it at VF-30? I have no problem calling it VF-30 net VF20. I am not good at netting them out, but I like that one. I have noticed a couple of EAC dealers I ran into did not always give the net eac grade, but coins were priced accordingly in my opinion. I am willing to bet you bought em all because you like the coin and the price.
ok here we go... 1796 xf40-45 1800 f15 1801 f12 cleaned 1811 solid 25 1824 35-40 1825 35 1826 35 1832 xf40 1842 AU50-53 but the discoloration under cent and the yellowing cast to the obverse almost makes me think short dip pickle barrel cent. May be just the pic/lighting.. hard to tell in pic on this one. 1857.. ok i compare yours to my ms63... seeing yours graded 64 and agreeing with the grade on yours only makes me more positive mine is undergraded...
