    These are known as challenge coins. They're pretty interesting and I have a large selection from my own career.

    It's just what they're called. There are all kinds of stories about them but if you're interested I can link an article where a serious numismatist discussed their origin. Essentially they're used as a way of acknowledging outstanding performance or as a token of membership in a into, project, etc. Let me know if you want to read it and I'll post the link.
