The owner of the coin has not posted in almost a month. He will probably not hand it back to PCGS unless they do something for him. I would probably put the slab in a frame and hang it on the wall. I would save it just for the crazy memory.
You posted this an hour and a half after I posted. I hope you're not referring to me! As @ldhair wrote, I would probably put it on display somewhere also but not where others can see it (only me), in case they think it's real and get any ideas
I think Larry is suggesting that PCGS lies about the way they say they grade and do quality control. That's my best guess at what he is implying by posting a PCGS made video of their own grading standards. You know, since his regular cent was mislabeled as a matte proof.
If you watch the video, i believe Mr Pelf is displaying how hard it SHOULD BE for such a dis-heartening mistake to be made. There is a verification stage where a 3rd, or sometimes 4th, world class grader-checks the coin after encapsulation to check the orders for ACCURACY and CONSISTENCY. This is followed up by Mechanical Verification , where yet another employee checks to make sure there is no error on the label. This is sort of enlightening, to think that this coin slid past 4-5 different sets of eyes undetected, that they had made a huge mistake. After much deliberation and heart break, i believe had i been in Mr Pelf shoes. I would NOT return the coin, would go public w it, and FORCE the mighty PCGS to make some sort of payment to keep my mouth shut and have the coin returned! Hell, threaten to send Mr Salzberg @ NGC an Email with photos! I bet he would run wild with this story! Since it happened so recently, and he was (oddly enough) just starting to put PCGS on blast 4 some of their egregious business antics. If that doesnt work, then insure the coin for $40,000 and stage a burglary. I kid I kid !
I assumed he was hoping to make a point, yes, but mine was that we shouldn't have to guess. The guy hasn't posted to this thread in a month, yet when he finally pops in he posts nothing but a video link? Words... they do a body good.
I think the topic of "what to do with this coin" sure makes for interesting conversation. I don't think Larry will ever be able to sell the coin as a matte proof (MP) and get away with it. A coin like that gets checked closely and by someone who knows what to look for. Not to mention any potential buyer is going to verify the PCGS certification. I just punched in the cert # and it comes up as "item not found". You obviously can't crack it out of the slab either if you are going to try and convince someone it's a MP. It would be a good test to send it to NGC for crossover and see if they notice the mistake. I'm guessing they will because of the high value. I think if I were Larry I would post photos of the coin on all the online forums with the cert # blacked out. Just for giggles. Maybe get zoomed-in high definition photos to see if anyone notices. The idea was floated earlier in the thread that this could be from an undiscovered matte proof die. Maybe putting it out there like that gets others in the know to corroborate that. Can you imagine if this was an undiscovered MP die? That would instantly make it more valuable than most/all? other MP's.
They have had similar things happen to them as well from time to time so that would really just be a case of glass houses. In fairness just because they want another look at it doesn't mean they will change their mind after taking a look. But if the consensus is right about it getting a proof instead of MS grade with a labeling error that happens to all the services from time to time
I think Larry has moved on to presenting a case that PCGS has caused him emotional distress due to his inability to communicate now.
