Hi there, Does anyone have any problems importing from the U.K. or Europe ie. licences etc? Kind Regards, Colin
The problem is not only from where are you importing from but as well as to where you are importing to. What country are you based in. welcome to cointalk by the way.
Thanks. I was just wondering about coins in England, say bought at auction, and being sent to the U.S. Kind Regards, Colin
It would depend on the value of the coin/coins, also how the seller compleated the customs docket you could be eligable to pay import duty
I think it actually depends on what the coins are. Great Britain kinda frowns on certain things being exported. But as long as it is not some great rarity you shouldn't have any problems.
Only realy been a couple that have had export licences stopped and they were ultra rare coins :smile otherwise there are no real problems with exporting coins. You might need to check the rules your end for recieving coins though. Over here I know there is no tax on imported Gold (Dependant on sale price)
In some European countries problems could arise if the coins offered are more than 100 years old. Blame the Unesco Cultural Property Convention (1970) and the Unidroit Convention on Illegally Exported Cultural Objects (1995) ... basically ideas that make sense in my opinion, but quite vague and theoretical in some regards. In countries where the Unidroit Convention is applicable law* you need a certificate if you want to export a "cultural object" that is more than 100 years old. The question is whether that also applies to any "mass" coin from, say, the early 20th century. Maybe some court will one day deal with an issue like that ... (* As far as I know, the UK has not signed that Unidroit convention though.) Christian
Nope thankfuly not as yet, but I do believe that Malta & Cyprus have & the US have put a number of coins on the NO NO list without any real consultation with the hobby itself
If you are talking about importing coins of Britain and the UK, Scotland, Ireland etc. There is no problem almost anything many be exported from there and imported here. And you do not have to worry about import duties. The US has no import duties on collectible coins. It is one point where a US collector has a big advantage over European collectors when bidding in an international auction. Our dollar may be down, but we don't have the VAT taxes or the import duties that many other European collectors have to pay on their purchases. That means in many cases the European collector has to pay up to 27% more than a US collector to acquire the same coin.
Depends on where that collector is. Being in Germany I would have to pay 7 percent tax (EUSt) on coins purchased from sellers outside the EU. Not that much, and even that I don't have to pay in quite a few cases - depends mostly on the value. (Now when I buy from an EU based dealer, I pay the VAT which applies in that dealer's member state - again 7 percent in DE, but almost 20 percent in FR for example. Guess where I don't buy that often ...) Christian
That is good to know :thumb: I allways worry that people I am sending stuff to in the USA might get hit like I have been over here a few times
