Whats it worth? It's hard to compare the different grades online and I'd just be making a guess. Thoughts?
I hate to say it and maybe Im wrong but, Im questioning the authenticity of this coin. The date looks like it has been added. With such a low mintage, Im sure quite a few altered and fake pieces exist. To me, your coin has been altered at the very least. The rest of the deatils seem questionable as well, but Im 99% sure it is not a real 1886. Sorry
You could be right? I just checked out the date under higher magnification and it looks like little swirls make the date. Almost like tiny little welds. Sucks but no sweat, i found it in a box. It does weigh dead on 6.2.
Reverse also is a turn off with the lack of crispness and the mushy details. Looks like cast evidence along the reverse rim. Shield also looks too sharp despite the details on the rest of the eagle and letters. Don't walk. Run.
Yeah the first thing I noticed about it, was that the date didnt exhibit the same amount of wear the rest of the coin shows. That's a big red flag for sure. You have a good educational piece if nothing else
Absolutely. I didn't pay anything for it luckily. I'm new to all of this and inherited a lot of old coins from my grandfather who was in the coin business for years. This was loose in a box with a bunch of other coins (apparently for a reason).
