Very nice! Until this post, I didn't even realize that they still made a Half Dime in 1871? I guess I assumed that they would cease minting them after they had started with the Nickel. I know, never "assume". Thanks for pointing out my ignorance, lol.
Nah, for some reason, the half dime and the nickel overlapped by eight years. The last half dime was struck in 1873.
An 1871 proof is a remarkable thing. 960 Mintage. Survival...? Half dime. Remarkable and gorgeous survivor from the 19th century.
I’m a big fan of 19th century proofs, though I can’t always afford them. This one wasn’t too bad. It’s a $600 coin per PCGS trend price, but I got it from an old numismatic friend for $460 delivered. Getting nice 19th century proofs for under 500 bucks is still doable, but not exactly an everyday occurrence, especially for me.
I'm in the same boat. I love 19th century proofs; 20th century proofs; 21st century common denomination proofs. As I've previously posted that's because me and Dad (RIP) collected proof sets together back in the day. An author of one of the renowned Redbook Guides stated he knew of no one that collected JUST proof coins. Well, here we are. I'm slowly working from both ends of the spectrum, albeit maybe lower grade and value purchases but proof 19th century toward 21st century. So far it's been a superbly fun and educational ride.
Well...THAT post and attachment did NOT go as planned. I'll blame it on the cats interference...go away...
Gotta love those "helpers"! PS- nice vibe in that room. I like the bookshelves and window with greenery outside. That, and the cat, of course. My kinda space.
His cat looks most comfortable, and I certainly do not believe it is an interference to him. Beautiful cat thanks for the pic of the two of you.
