Just curious how everyone gets there coins to add to there collection. so i'm going to do a little poll if you have time please vote .
I buy my coins but not from banks but dealers, and since 2013 I've been 100% online. Not that I have anything against stores, just that I wasn't going to drive two hours to go window shopping. You know what, my new town has coin store, and I think I'm going to go check it out. I hope this was as helpful to your poll as it was for me making afternoon plans.
Try to find a local coin club in your area. I've been involved in a number local clubs over the years and it is well worth attending. Some allow members/dealers to sell items and many sponsor local shows. One common thread is that nearly all the members will be helpful. They should be able to fill you in good local dealers and local regional shows.
I buy my coins from dealers -- both stores and online -- as well as online auctions. There is a dearth of coin shops for the size of the area where I live, but I buy from a couple when I can to help support them.
I've won a few coins in contests and whatnot but the vast majority of mine are purchased either directly from other collectors, dealers or auction houses and almost all online. I've only purchased a handful of coins in person as the coin shops near me mostly just have overpriced junk as far as ancients go.
By whatever means necessary. Ethical or otherwise! Seriously, it's always a treasure hunt! I don't think there's one right answer.
Let me think, The US mint makes em, They find there way to bank, Then I buy boxes from the bank and Wa La!!!! I buy 99% of my mint coins and silver from Provident, What little that is.
I picked up a massive collection of Morgans from a state unclaimed property auction a couple weeks ago. A couple choice pieces from Heritage Auctions last month. 2 coins from Ebay. A few from an estate sale back in January. I'm addicted!
I buy from the US mint, apmex, MCM, ebay and my local "We Buy Gold" shop. I also make the rounds at the banks in my area for boxes of cents and rolls of halves.
@FRESHY82 As you can see from the varied responses, there are a lot more ways that coins can be acquired than you have listed in your poll. I selected "win them (auctions, etc.)", but that really isn't my main source for coins. I got most of my coins from dealers at coin shows and locally where I could view them in hand. It isn't that I distrust many coin sellers on eBay, but I do! For medals, eBay has been my main source, but I have had greater success making offers to the sellers before the medals get any bids. I once bought 44 medals from an eBay seller in France the very same day that he listed them, but since none had received any bids, he pulled all of the auctions and sold them to me. I negotiated a similar deal with an eBay seller in New England for 40 medals that were already listed. Chris
Question from a long time collector...How does one go about "winning" a coin from an auction? I've always had to pay for mine.
Majority of mine I find from spare change from daily stuff. Got quite a bit when I was younger and worked in a grocery store. I kept a pocket full of extra change and would exchange it when I see something interesting. I found quite a few wheat pennies this way. Plus one very worn down buffalo nickel and a mercury dime. A few have been given to me as gifts. Haven't been to a coin store or show yet.
My 'moderns' come from the US Mint and my 'classics' come from coin shows and trusted online dealers who have my 'want' lists.........
