Semiquincentennial Quarters

Dang, that's a word...... I got excited when the state quarter series came along and I stashed rolls of my favorite state quarters and that ended up being an exercise in futility..... Well, I find that I am a bit excited about the semiquincentennial quarters. I think there are some really appealing designs there. So here's my question. I can buy them from the US mint at a little better than 2X face value. Is there any valid reason that I can't expect to purchase them from my bank at face value?

It's worth a try

 

One word: scalpers.

A lot of the 2026 coin rolls are completely out, and while there are a lot of collectors looking to secure a roll or 2, there are so many people buying into the hype of individual coins potentially being worth a ton of money due to the special designs that some people are buying as many rolls as humanly possible to feed on the hype. Some predict that the 2026 coins will be very scarce in circulation due to this.

The same thing is what arguably destroyed Pokémon for millions of people.

Your best bet? If you want a Mint roll, get there as soon as the release. As long as a bot doesn't beat you to it, as many of these bots are programmed to bypass household limits.

 

When the state quarters first came out my bank would give me a call to let me know and I would pick up a roll, but these were only the Denver coins as I live in Colorado. I picked up Philadelphia rolls from my LCS. Around 2003 the bank would no longer hold them or call me, so I set up an account with the Mint and began purchasing them there, not sure when they actually started selling rolls like that. I did the same for the ATB rolls and was praying they would stop after that program was completed, which of course they did not.

I am completely exhausted from these. I did not buy any of the Women's quarters, just the 2 mint sets I get every year and what I can glean from circulation and roll hunting. I have no plans to purchase rolls of the 2026 coins, my thought is they will be similar to the bicentennial mintages, more than enough to get whatever you want without spending anything extra, other than of course the mint opposite of wherever you may live.

 

Shades of the 1950 D nickel, an notorious coin that was almost impossible to find in circulation because the speculators bought up most of the supply. Patience friends. Everyone knows that the mint is going to produce oodles of these coins. Don't buy into the hype that any one of these pieces will be rare. Better to try and score an anomaly or an error if that's possible......

 

In my area I doubt I’ll find one in circulation. I’m still missing a number of the 2024, 2925 and the 2926 quarters. We only get recycled coins so I have to buy them at a slight margin just to plug a hole.
