It dawned on me that only recently would those designers, engineers and tool builders, have been working with those items using geometric design tolerancing so there would be a long chain where one tiny error could throw off subsequent calculations leaving a setup guy with a faulty die set height data. Not just square and vertical stack tolerances in Z, but tapers and such used to seat and hold them. Complex errors until tolerancing became more unified.

I'll assume die clashes are few and far between for coins made within the last 10 to 15 years?

The difference between the two pennies is that mine does not show a counter clash and his does.
Forgive me for being a stick in the mud but other than that a multiple strike and a clash event can exist on the same coin , they have nothing to do with each other.
Just like my coin below is broad struck by dies that were already clashed . Coins like this have two different errors.

Sounds good ! Shield cent clashes are few and far between . I think I only have maybe three.

I'm getting my head wrapped around it and thanks for your patience and sharing. From the narrative and what I see, they had a problem with the press likely in the form of the rod journal failing although a main possible, just a bit less likely. Maybe band-aided it after a clash then all hades broke loose resulting in the prior die clashed dies, broad striking.

I like pennies that feel like beer bottle caps. If I ever open a brewery, I'll cap my bottles with golden quarters.

Kristine this is a cool coin but you will probably get more views and a broader spectrum of opinions if you start a new thread for your find. To me it looks to be struck through a late stage die cap

Welcome. That nickel appears tortured. Did it talk?

That's for you to tell us as you work with presses. Take a look at the reverse of 50 Morgan dollars and probably half a dozen will have multi-off-center clashes.

Doing something on purpose and by accident or ignorance are all different cases.:D

No, I have designed, built and worked on many things mechanical and electronic. It's not what I do now at all, not even close. However, the question was actually answered clearly and directly. Nomenclature. :)

At this point I have learned some new and interesting terminology but Lord knows I'll never remember it all. I do wish that we had a Mint press operator and a Mint tool and die person here to chime in also.

Do Mint Employees sign a non-disclosure on hire?
I have had to sign non-disclosures for other processes simply because the shop held government contracts...

Good question but I don't have an answer. Usually it's engineers/developers that sign these to protect design and other info. As a former press operator in plastics, the only time I had to sign off on anything, is if I was working with an engineer in modifications on machinery. ( And only if those mods worked ).

We'll try this again. Hopefully he's willing to share his knowledge in this area for the benefit of the board.... @dcarr
