I would not recycle any old designs. There is too much of that already. Do something original and new, I say.
I think there are a number of reasons turkeys have increased, especially in suburban and urban areas. 1. fairly tolerant of humans 2. no hunting inside city limits and limited hunting elsewhere 3. omnivorous 4. prolific 5. big enough to withstand most predators smaller than a coyote 6. nonmigratory 7. human population growth, especially to suburbs and small country properties near towns
They frequent my backyard in Maine quite regularly. When they come through, there are generally somewhere between 20-30 of them. It is not uncommon to see a field with lots of them around. Back when I had time to hunt, they would often travel under my stand while I was hunting for deer. I know quite a number of deer hunters, but few who are into hunting for turkeys. Perhaps that is also a factor in how many there are? I would like to see an American coin featuring a turkey. Perhaps someone could start a petition for such a coin?
I also thought I heard about a disease affecting the fox population but I can't find anything about that online. We've lived here 26 years and saw one wild turkey out in our field for the first 20 years or so. In the past three years there's often a line of 20-30 marching through. They're even at my wife's office in the heart of town (across a busy road from a park). I agree it would be great to see one on a coin. It's quite a big, beautiful bird up close. They seem to be a lot smarter than their domestic cousins too.
You should try picking up a live turkey sometime. They will beat you to death with their wings. Did that once and my dad taught me how to clean it. Not an easy job.
