Neat site, glad I found it. I'am new to the sport but ahead of the game. My grand dad loved to collect coins. My brother, sister and I have about 500 rolls of Canadian cents. 500 rolls of US cents, maybe 50/50 wheat. We also have quarters, halves, dollars, mint sets (from US CA England New Zeland). OK the plan is to deal with the pennies first they are really heavy, and I have moved them four times. About to move again. Canadian cents are from 1960-1969 unc.. some have spots.. Might scrap them out? US cents... some dealers have told me to spend newer than 1959, but most of them are unc... and 1/3 are nice and red. Dealers also say they will give me 2 cents for a wheat cause they sell them for 3, but about a 1/4 of them are 1950-1958 unc and nice and red. I went to the coin show in grapevine texas yesterday and one guy who said they were worth 2 cents (wheat) then offered me $2 a roll about the time I walked off. He was helpful but I am in no hurry. some of the better coins are 1955s unc real bright...1958..1959 60p 64d 68s 81 83 all red and unc. alot of coins he labled vf bu and unc but they are brown What to do? spend post 1959 cents that are not red, even though grand dad marked a bunch bu very fine, but they are brown? or save these fifty years? should I keep red unc post 1959? ebay? spend? save them for fifty years? I think the red wheat rolls should go to ebay. or save fifty years? Whats up with the red book/dealer dispairity? And wher can I get their coin value guide. Thanks Andy
i really have no interest in canadian coins, so i don't really know what to do with those. as for the american cents, i keep every 1959 P and D, 1960 P and D just becuase they were the first couple years of the memorial. i also keep the 1961,1962, and 1963 cents from philly. i also tend to keep the 1969 P cents also, no matter what shape they are in. i think you could get alot more than 2 cents each for uncirculated wheats. those prices are for the worn circulated ones. the 1955S uncirculated has a nice value over the other ones. i would keep the 1959 cents and save them for some years. the design on the cent is suppose to change, so keep them. if i had the red cent rolls, i would sell them individualy to a collector. get more money that way. if you want the guide to dealers, buy the blue book. that gives you an idea what dealers will pay. well, hope this helps, and good luck!:kewl:
Before you do anything with those coins, purchase a book called The Red Book. Also, if available at a coin store or coin show look for a book called Looking Through Lincoln Cents. Regardless of what year the cents are there may be valuable coins there. For example the 1995 Double Die is now up to about $100 in MS grades. Numerous other error coins are also valuable. Get to know what you have. If in doubt go to www.coppercoins.com
And I thought I was the only one who kept those dates. Regarding your cents aandy767, I would hold onto the read wheaties and red early memorials, at least untill the design change in 2009. You could probably get much more money for them after that date. I would also keep any 1982 or earlier cents reguardless of color because they are copper, and worth 2.5 cents a piece just for their metal content. Those would be the ones you could save for 50 years, and hope metal prices keep going up. Hope this Helps!
Carl is right. Definately pick up a copy of "Looking Through Lincoln Cents". The website he added takes you to a copper cent site with a link to buy the book. It's the quintessential book for any Lincoln Cent collector...and I didn't get paid to say that, unless someone wants to pay me. Guy~
Went to coppercoins.com and looked around, will order the book. I wanted to see the grading pictures, but my browser just shows a blue? mark. I have been through them(cents) by roll and have an inventory that matches the boxes they are in. That's a huge relief, til I found dimes, and quarters, halves, etc.... Thanks, you guys have me on the right track. Andy
Searched for an answer, called a guy smarter than me (he didn't answer), tried IExplorer, Safari, Firefox, I hate that blue question mark. Near as I can tell it's the server that hosts the jpg, searched for a patch and tried a flash for an intel mac, but no luck. RED X ON IE...... Funny shape on fire fox GDJMSP (below) thanks, it's usualy me
