1988 Doubled ear?

I know it's not the regular 1988 DDO "doubled ear" but it looks weird

Sure you are not thinking about the 1984 doubled ear? That's the major one. 1997 has a more minor doubled ear.

 

I don't see doubling on yours but more like a weird hit to the ear, after the Mint.

Nice find.

 

I had thought the same thing, until I started looking at ms examples. The formation is a build up of something in the die and it doesn't strike up fully or has obstruction.
Below is a fully struck example the size of yours and the graded example are the same.
