I don't really have much LRB coins, only managed to get a few in the past. I've been focusing on almost everything else and neglecting that field. So I decided to start browsing a bit to see what was out there. Bad idea , I managed to find a few that I liked. Oh and of course I ended up getting a campgate which I had planned on adding at least one of to my collection... Licinius I A.D. 319-20 18x19mm 3.3gm o:IMP LICINIVS AVG; laureate head r:VICT dot LAETAE PRINC PERP; two Victories stg., facing one another, together holding shield inscribed VOT PR on altar inscribed with letter S. In ex. ∆SIS* RIC VII Siscia 96 Constantine I A.D. 318-19 19x20mm 2.9gm o:IMP CONSTANTINVS AVG, high crested helmet, cuir., spear across r. shoulder, shield on left arm inscribed with horseman. r:VICTORIAE LAETAE PRINC PERP, two Victories stg., facing one another, together holding shield inscribed VOT PR on altar. In ex. BSIS dot RIC VII Siscia 61
... and my first campgate coin Constantine I A.D. 328 19mm 2.7gm o:CONSTAN-TINVS AVG; pearl-diademed head. r:VIRTV-S AVGG; gateway with wide open doors, four turrets, star above; in fields S/F in ex. SCONST RIC VII Arles 321 now I may start looking for a falling horseman coin.
congrats @icerain ! (Is that pronounced "Ickey Rain?) Those are great examples you captured! I am like you, I do not collect LRB's, and really do not collect Empire... However, I do have a campgate: RI Crispus 317-326 CE AE Folles Caesar in Trier Campgate - Heraclea Mint
Ickey or itchy... either one. Probably should have picked a more presentable ID but it was a long time ago, and I might have drank a bit too much.
atta-boy, icerain => great new LRB additions!! (congrats) Ummm, I have a couple of humble examples as well ... wanna see? Constantine-I (open doors, yeehaaa) Licinius-I
LRB? What's that? LOL. If you looked at my collection you'd be forgiven for thinking the Roman Empire ended in the mid 3rd Century. Still, nice coins guys. Maybe I should give LRB a closer look.
Thank you! I changed the mint. Verified on NumisWiki, since I did not know, but was too lazy to look it up!
Super examples guys!! Well, I guess I'll post one of my favorite LRB's. Struck circa 328 AD. Constantinople mint. CONSTANTI-NVS MAX AVG, rosette-diademed head right, looking upwards / CONSTANTINI-ANA DAFNE, Victory seated left on cippus, holding branches trophy and captive before N/CONS. 2.7 grams
Spectaculair nice LRB coins , pleasure to see 'm. These came in yesterday , part of a lot of 10 coins for $20. Still busy with the other 7 coins.
You can get outstanding examples for a lot less than coins in other metals. One of my favorites I haven't posted in a while... Constantius II AE, 2.76g, 17mm; 6h; Alexandria Obv.: FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C; laureate cuirassed bust right Rev.: GLOR-IAEXERC-ITVS; two soldiers standing between two banners with dots, holding shield and spear In Ex.: SMALB
Excellent LRBs! I like all three, but especially the campgate... I'd love to eventually get one that's as nice-looking. Some of my favorites... Constantine II CRISPUS MAGNUS MAXIMUS
I won't post all of the nice LRBs that I have but here's one that immediately popped into mind: And here is a campgate type you don't see often: Valentinian III, Western Roman Empire AE nummus Obv: D N VALENTINIANO P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped bust right Rev: CRA-TRA, campgate, star above Mint: Rome Date: 440-455 AD Ref: RIC X 2160
I really like Constantine and I think one day I'll flesh out a dynasty set. Actually I have most of them already just not the wife & mother. Here's my latest LRB: Crispus Caesar, AD 317-326 Ӕ Follis, 18m, 3.1g, 6h; London mint, AD 318 Obv.: FL IVL CRISPVS NOB CAES, Laureate draped cuirassed bust right Rev.: PRINCIPIA I-VVENTVTIS; Crispus standing right in military dress, holding spear and shield, crescent in left field In Ex.: PLN The brothers: Constantine II AE Reduced follis, 18mm, 3.1g; 6h; London, 318 AD Obv.: FL CL CONSTANTINVS IVN NC; Bust laureate, draped cuirassed, seen from back Rev.: PRINCIPIA I-VVENTVTIS; Prince in military dress, standing right, cloak spread, leaning on reversed vertical spear, hand resting on shield; crescent right In Ex.: PLN Sadly I don't have or even know if a PRINCIPIA IVVENTVTIS exists for Constans. But here's a lovely green one. Constans, 333-337 AD AE3; Siscia mint: 347 AD. Obv.: CONSTAN-S PF AVG; rosette-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right. Rev.: VICTOR-IA AVGG; Victory walking left holding wreath in each hand, Chi-Rho in right field // *ASIS* Dear ole dad: Constantius I as Caesar, AD 293-305 Æ Follis, 29mm, 9.6g, 12h; Trier mint, AD 303 Obv.: CONSTANTIVS NOBIL C, laureate and cuirassed bust right / Rev.: GENIO POPV-LI ROMANI, Genius standing left, wearing modius on head, holding patera and cornucopiae; S-F In Ex.: ITR The man himself: Constantine I, AD 306-337 AE, 18mm, 2.7g; 6h; Sirmium, AD 324-325 Obv.: CONSTANTINVS AVG; laureate bust right Rev.: SARMATIA DEVICTA; Victory advancing right, holding trophy, palm branch, spurning captive seated on ground to right In Ex.: SIRM Ya, I'm a little bored.
Man, I hate you guys. First I caved and bought a bronze coin, now these LRB you guys are posting are making me wish I had some. Collecting all that silver, I felt like a proper ancient numismatist. Like I was in the tick and thin of the hobby, but now I just realize how much I was missing out on because of my closed minded approach. I feel like I missed a lot because of that.
At one time I felt similar as you did: I am only collecting AR, specifically Roman Republic AR Denarii. As I opened my mind to other areas, AE, AR, PB, AV, EL no longer were restrictions or targets. I began to understand that the historical significance of the various coins were what attracted me. Instead of looking through a window or two for collecting focus, whole DOORS were opened. Now I just chose what is interesting to me and I chase and capture.
