Hi all, So these are the last 2 coins that were attributed by NGC of the 13 Misc. coins I sent in back in mid January. They were both big disappointments in the attributions. But it's part of the learning process. As long as my South African Krugerrand was not fake, that's what would of concerned me the most First is this 1863 Silver German Taler - Frankfurt - Princes EXCESSIVE SURFACE HAIRLINES - UNC DETAILS This was in my fathers world coin collection that he left me before he passed away. It has been my favorite World Coin even in the condition it is in. So I still love it! Second is this 2000 South Africa Gold Krugerrand. It was labeled as REMOVED FROM JEWELRY - UNC DETAILS - My second gold coin ever.. well it still is gold so that's what counts for me Cool thing I noticed today is that the Bing daily wallpaper just happens to be South African Springboks! (I want to share this Bing image with you) @Nathan401
Gold coins that were set in jewelry really frustrate me. It seems that most gold dollars and quarter eagles on ebay were part of jewelry at some point. It is really one of the major factors that has kept me from collecting more gold.
I learned about the jewelry damage the hard way, too. When I submitted the ANA National Convention medals to NGC, two of the 19mm bronze came back "Details - Mount Removed". I didn't notice it before, but I could just make out a small arc on the rim of both. I like the Taler, @paddyman98 ! Chris
Don't buy gold except for a basic premium over spot value unless you have a large fund of money. Too many things can go wrong to reduce its value. I have some gold coins but the majority I paid only the standard premium over spot. That way I know I was going to be in the black if I ever tried to sell them as long as gold did not drop. So far I only bought a few which are "worth" less now than when I bought them
Is that a German Shooting Taler? My brother collected shooting talers in the 1970's. Wonder if he still has them.
No, as the inscription says, it commemorates the 1863 Fürstentag in Frankfurt. Here is some background info in English ... Christian
