Hey Folks, to the best of my knowledge, this is a discovery coin!

It’s a “1926 buffalo nickel” made on German silver.

I pulled this out of circulation a year or two ago but hadn’t really gotten around to studying it.

I sent it to someone who studies them and did an XRF scan. He confirmed it was common to use German silver for contemporary counterfeits.

Yes, yes it is. I wonder if that way cool scale came with it?

Yes, though it’s a bit cheating. I was in Europe and got my hands on tons of nickels. This came out of that batch.

That's a real fun coin @Seattlite86 Is that damage or a huge die crack coming from the leg?

Thank you! That’s a crack, actually. It was the crack that first alerted me to the coin being off. Never seen one go sideways like that. I then saw pitting on the obverse and suspected it was a counterfeit. There are a couple of rim dings at the 6 o’clock on the obverse.

The only one I have (that I know about). Your nickel looks pretty good at first glance but it seems like by the color you can tell how much copper is in it.
