1895 proof Morgan Hope all is having a great day! Im try to get info on the 95 proof. The date is pretty distinctive and 179 reeds on edge but i need more to determine if one is real. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Well why I’m waiting for a reply I will share the experience that I’m having. A client of mine brought me four old school Meghrig albums. 3 are the Morgans and 1 peace This is not the albums but one similar.
The peace album was a complete set and the Morgan’s only had 1 coin missing 1893cc. A few Morgan’s are in mint state the rest are circulated condition. After examining the albums they pulled out a 1895 p Morgan
As far as I can tell this coin is the real deal date looks right has 179 reeds (that I counted twice) other than that I’m lost!! Yes I weighed it and tested on the sigma all was good
I wish I was a Morgan expert... I am not, but I see nothing that lends me to believe that piece is anything other than genuine.
I am not convinced the date position, and stars seem to all line up, haven't checked the reverse. That blob and double rim give me even more caution. I would like to know some of the other diagnostics to this coin, hopefully others have some good info.
I am using a PF25 https://coins.ha.com/itm/proof-morg...BrowseTabs-Auction-Archive-ThisAuction-120115 and a PF40 for comparison. https://coins.ha.com/itm/morgan-dol...-4299.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515# There are 2 different date positions, yours matches the 40. Notice the Bust point is in the same position on all three.
That was the first place I looked and did not see anything fishy so I counted the reeds. Proofs have 179 reeds and business strikes have 190.
I chose 11 coins from the collection to take to the ANA event in Savannah in 2 weeks to have grade by CAC. So we will def. find out! Ether way I’m having a blast!!!
This is what PCGS says about them. Presumably, Proofs can be told apart from potential circulation strikes by the number of edge "reeds" (the raised "bumps" on the edge of the coin). Proofs will have 179 "reeds", whereas circulation strikes will have some other number.
