United States: 1855-O silver Seated Liberty half dollar, arrows at date PCGS XF40. Cert. #48067405. Numista-14903, Krause-Mishler-82. Mintage: 3,688,000. Ex-"rlhesq.1968", eBay, 8 February 2026. This coin's darkish appearance may not be to everyone's taste. I, however, actually prefer circulated silver coins XF and under that have this look. I refer to it as the "Circulated Cameo" look, or "CircCam" for short. That term has gained some acceptance in the wider numismatic community. Some collectors call an originally-toned coin like this "crusty". Others might refer to it as "antique patina". Again, it's not for everyone, but I like it very much. Mind you, I do not like monochrome dark coins. There has to be some contrast, with darker fields and lighter devices. That contrast makes the design elements "pop". 025488
I like coins like this also. It has what some people call a "vintage look". I know, we call it toning.
Ahh, but I don’t object to cleaning when there’s a story behind it, like that one has. That’s one of the nicer “shipwreck effect” SS Republic coins I’ve seen. Maybe it spent its sojourn on the seafloor in the middle of a clump, and thus was partly protected by the surrounding coins?
