I first came across this piece (or one like it) at an exhibition of silver art almost 40 years ago that included some magnificent eagles and other nature pieces some with gilded beaks and talons. Priced an eagle at $15K+ and passed.

Fast forward to the late nineties when I got a call about an upgrade in a copper Gobrecht dollar so I went over to take a look. My guy was in conversation with another dealer over a large crate. Well, I quickly determined that I wasn't going to give up my dollar for a processed one, but overheard him say "We could melt her down." I loaded the crate into my trunk at $7.30/oz.
